Dear Families

What a wonderful, warm, heart filled welcome we celebrated with our new families and students last week. It was also great to see the happy, smiling faces of our children and whānau returning for another year of schooling earlier in the week.  As our community grows, we are heartened by the kindness, arohanui and generosity of our families who reach out to support those who are new, who need a helping hand with transport, who need support and extra love as they settle into their new environment. THANK YOU – this is what it means to be Holy Trinity people and helps to “strengthen community”.

As a Catholic School we share in the goals for Catholic education … to be a place where we communicate Christ, helping to form Christ in the lives of others … a place to encounter the loving God so that each person and child experiences a genuine and ongoing encounter with Christ … a place to grow in knowledge and understandings of Christ’s teachings …  a place where Christian witness is nurtured and strengthened within the community of our Lord’s disciples, the Church.

This is our hope for our school community – that together we grow/flourish in unity and in learning ka ako, loving ka aroha and serving ka manaaki, in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.

The photos below depict our new students with their families being welcomed with a school whakatau and receiving their welcome certificates and Holy Trinity prayer kete for home.

Principal’s Message

Dear Families

This coming week, we celebrate a beautiful time of the Church liturgical year with an Ash Wednesday Liturgy. Ash Wednesday begins the Lenten season which is a time of spiritual preparation, examination and penance leading up to the celebration of Easter. We use this lenten time to pray – deepening our relationship with God; to focus on self-denial – going without; and for almsgiving – doing charitable acts. These are wonderful means of drawing closer to God.

Reflectionsourced from Liturgy Ritual Prayer LRP e news …

Isn’t it interesting that we begin this big, holy season smack dab in the middle of the work and school week? It isn’t Ash Sunday or Ash Monday. But here we are. Ash Wednesday reminds us that life doesn’t happen neatly, according to our timelines, and neither does God. God isn’t waiting for an opening in our schedules. God calls to you and me every day. God reaches out to us on Sundays and hump days and good days and “meh” days. “Even now,” says the Lord. Whatever is going on today, let’s not wait a moment. Let’s listen, say a prayer, and do whatever it takes to respond to God’s loving call.

Family Prayer –

Have one person read the prayer aloud – the rest of the family can respond after each line: Be with us, Jesus!

Lord God, thank you for this holy season.
Draw us closer to you in the days and weeks ahead.
Help us to listen to your voice in our hearts. Amen.

School Board News …

Greetings, Kia ora, Kia orana, Talofa, Mālo e lelei, Namaste, Ni Hao, Bula, Hola, Kumusta, Namaskārām, Sat Shri Akaal, Vanakkam and Ayubowan

To begin with we would like to thank all of you for your part in the fantastic start to the school year. All of our children benefit when we all work together to ensure that every member of the school community is supported for the very best beginning of a new year of faith filled education.

New Board Member

Due to the unfortunate resignation of Mitchell Wright, an opening arose on the HTCPS Board. As notified last year, the Board has undertaken the selection process for a replacement member of the board. We are happy to announce that Lenis Martin has been selected for the Board, and we are looking forward to working with her this year.

School Access and Roadworks

As you will no doubt be aware, with the information included in recent school communication, access to Holy Trinity from Airfield Road is still open from the Mill Road end,  Amokura Ave. and Takahe Ave.  We encourage parents to continue to use the school drive through for morning drop off and afternoon pick up.

If accessing the school from the back gate, we would ask parents to move carefully in and out of Kapowai Boulevard, especially when dropping off or picking up students. Please also be especially careful when passing the parked vehicles, both for crossing children, and for vehicles moving in the opposite direction.

On behalf of the school Board, thank you to all our parents/caregivers, whānau and friends of the school, for your on-going support, as we work together in the best interests of our children’s education.

Blessings to you all

Jason Farley
Presiding Member
Holy Trinity Catholic Primary School Board

DRS Report

Whakatau/School Mass

It’s been an exciting and busy start to the year and we are most excited to officially welcome our new priest Father Tony King-Archer of St Mary’s Parish, Papakura who will be celebrating his first Mass with us here at school on Wednesday 4 March at 9:30am in Taamaua/school hall. We will begin with our traditional Whakatau welcoming, before Mass commences. A reminder will be sent out on HERO to all our school whānau to join us on this special occasion.

Shrove Tuesday

On Tuesday 17 February, we celebrate Shrove Tuesday also known as ‘pancake day’. Shrove Tuesday is the last day before Lent, which is a time of fasting and traditionally, people would give up all animal products throughout Lent, including food like eggs and milk. Christians would eat pancakes on the last day before Lent begins, to use up things in the cupboard like flour, eggs and milk that they wouldn’t be eating for Lent. So this Tuesday, our students will be making their own pancake in the Learning Community as a way to commemorate the traditions of Shrove Tuesday and prepare for a time of fasting in Lent.

Dedication Mass

On Tuesday 17 February, all our teachers and school staff will be joining with staff from all Catholic schools in Auckland, early childhood, primary and secondary schools for a Dedication Mass. This annual Mass is a special way to recommission everyone working in Catholic schools as they serve and educate our wider Catholic communities each year. All our school staff and Board will be attending this Mass at Christ the King Parish in Owairaka.

Ash Wednesday Liturgy

Ash Wednesday falls on the 18th of February this year and this marks the beginning of our Lenten journey. Lent is a special Season of the Church’s Liturgical year. It begins on Ash Wednesday where Catholics around the world attend a special Liturgy where we are marked with the ashes on our foreheads. It is a period where we as Christians pray, fast and give. The 40 days of Lent are not literally 40, rather the number evokes all other uses of 40 in the Scriptures. Jesus fasted for 40 days as he prepared to proclaim the Good News.

Our school will be celebrating our own Ash Wednesday Liturgy at school at 9:15am in Taamaua/school hall. We invite all our parents and school whānau to join us on the beginning of our Lenten journey this year.

A Tātou Whakapapa/Our Story

Along with celebrating our school’s “ten year anniversary”, it’s quite timely that our first connected curriculum concept learning this year is based on “A Tātou Whakapapa/Our Story” which is one of the four main themes in the Religious Education Curriculum. Our tamariki will be able to explore our school story and deepen their understanding of our Catholic stories as well as having the opportunities for them to share their own stories. We look forward to this term and it’s rich learning that comes with it.

Let us pray,
May the God of our community walk with us and beside us, sharing our journeys, listening to our stories, embracing who we are, and rejoicing in our triumphs throughout this school year.

May we be courageous like our whānau patrons, who brave the waters of change and continue to share the light of Christ.

May we live like St Mary MacKillop who challenges to see a need and do something about it.

May we be brave like Mother Suzanne Aubert who was loved by the Maori people because of the gentle steadfast way she lived out her faith.

May we be like the first bishop of Aotearoa New Zealand. Bishop Pompallier who showed resilience in the hardship he had to face during his time and showed us that with God, nothing was impossible.

May we live like Bishop Patrick Dunn, who, in his gentle way, lived out God’s gentle love through his deep and gentle pastoral care for his people and his deep gentle love of Christ.

May God continue to bless us to grow into a strong and vibrant community, one marked by concern for others, being welcoming to others and to trust each in the Trinity.
Amen

Important Traffic Information (1)

PLEASE NOTE – access to Airfield Road is ‘limited’ at the moment due to the Vector/Spark project happening in our area.
Currently the project crew are working at the Porchester Road end/roundabout which means there is no acces to Airfield Road from this end. From the map, it looks like the project team has commenced the ‘Brown Phase’.
Please enter Airfield Rd by …
1. using Mill Road roundabout – it will say Airfield Road is closed but it is open for school traffic and local traffic at this time – displayed signage with HTCPS logo is there to advise drivers that the road is open for school traffic at this stage
2. using side streets – Amokura Ave or Takahe Ave – off Kuaka Drive – these streets will bring you out on to Airfield Road but you will need to negotiate a labyrinth of streets from Kuaka Drive
3. using Kapowai Boulevard /off Kuaka Drive – for parking and then walk into school using the back gate
When you leave school using the front entrance – you will need to turn right to go back to Mill Road roundabout or turn left to use Amokura Ave or Takahe Ave to access Kuaka Drive then onto Porchester Road.
This is a 6 month project (an upgrade of infrastructure) and the crew will be working along Airfield Road throughout this time digging massive trenches and installing cables etc. They will be working incrementally along Airfield Road. The work directly outside school is planned for the April holidays to reduce the impact on school traffic.
At some stage, Mill Road end will be closed for access as well as the side streets – Amokura Ave or Takahe Ave – off Kuaka Drive. The Project team will keep us in the loop and we’ll ‘rejig’ school access as we go along!
Emergency vehicles will always have access to the front entrance of school.
Thank you for your patience and understanding as we work together with the Network Project Team to ensure all are safe and well on the school access roads.

Important Traffic Information (2)

Tuesday 20 January 2026

Hello,

An update on the electricity network project in your area

As promised, we’d like to keep you updated on the project as we work through your area and take this opportunity to thank you for your patience so far.

As a reminder, we’re here to upgrade electrical equipment near you, as well as support the development of a new data centre, which will deliver essential information storage and exchange services to the wider community. The work is currently underway until approximately mid-2026. Final reinstatement is scheduled in 2027 (we’ll keep you updated as we go).

Excavation has started on Porchester Road, between Popes Road and Airfield Road. We’re also preparing to move back into Nancy Wake Street (West) and then on the northern section of Takanini School Road on to Porchester Road from approximately Tuesday 27 January 2026, and then into Airfield Road (between Porchester Road and Mill Road) from approximately Thursday 5 February 2026 (please see the reverse side of this letter for a map of the work zones and latest timeframe).

Once again, we appreciate this is a significant amount of time to be in your area and are committed to getting it finished as quickly and quietly as we can. We’ve coordinated with Auckland Transport to minimise disruption to you and your community as much as we can.

Work will take place on the following roads (which will be signposted):

  • Airfield Road (1–90)
  • Takanini School Road (20–56)
  • Porchester Road (252–314)
  • Nancy Wake Street (West)

During the work period please expect the following:

  • Driveway Access – on the even (western) side of Porchester Road will be restricted from approximately 7am -7pm. Traffic control staff will assist you with access during these times. Please bear with us during this time as we complete the work as fast as possible.
  • Excavation work – there will be excavations in the roadway which will be barriered off for safety. Where required, mats will be used to reduce noise and vibration.
  • Work hours – Monday to Sunday, 7am–7pm. Some late evening work (until 10pm) may occur for critical tasks.
  • Noise management – Noisy activities (e.g., concrete cutting, hydro-vacuuming) will be limited to 8am–6pm as much as possible.
  • Parking and access – Temporary street parking restrictions on Porchester Road. Property access may be limited at times. Affected residents will be notified in advance.
  • Power outages – In 2026, planned outages may be required. Affected customers will receive advance notice.

The work is being carried out by Stockman General Contractors on behalf of Vector. If you have any questions, please contact Lisa Jenkins of Stockman General Contractors on 021 329 982 or email lisa@sgc.co.nz or Marty Arwani on 027 475 0042 or marty@sgc.co.nz

We understand the inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your cooperation.

Kind regards,

Graeme Marshall – Vector Project Manager      Takanini Project – Notification Letter 2025.01.20 Final (3)

Open Learning Communities Afternoon – Greet and Meet!

Whānau are invited to come to school to meet with the children’s kaitiaki/teachers in their respective Learning Communities between 3:00pm and 4:00pm on Wednesday 25th February. Kaitiaki /teachers will be sharing how their Learning Community operates and the systems and processes in place that will enable whānau to support at home ensuring the children have a successful year ahead.

You will be able to spend time in each of the Learning Communities meeting and chatting with kaitiaki!
Formal Mahi Tahi Parent/Student/Teacher Conference times, will be held on Wednesday 9th March from 1:00pm – 7:00pm and Thursday 10th March 3:15pm – 5:30pm. We will be endeavouring to catch up with all our whānau in this first term of the year.

Student Attendance

As you will be aware through the media, there is a great concern around students attendance at school and the impact this is having on levels of student progress and achievement. The Ministry of Education is requesting schools to have an “intervention thresholds” in place so that student attendance is monitored, tracked and intervention strategies are put in place quickly and efficiently to ensure high rates of school attendance for every child.

For Holy Trinity School, our student attendance concern is with the large number of children who are regularly arriving late to school after the 8:50am bell or are leaving school early in the afternoon.

The school gates open from 8:30am and children are able to be on site. This then allows time for them to organise themselves for the day ahead, greet and spend time with their kaitiaki/teachers and friends, undertake roles and responsibilities, prepare for morning karakia/prayer etc.

School begins at 8:50am with morning karakia/prayer – it’s important that the children are at school and have this time for prayer, song, reflection and meditation.

School finishes at 2:50pm with afternoon karakia/prayer – again, it’s important that children remain at school for the full day.

As the first intervention tier for our school, we will be …
1. monitoring student lateness and we will be communicating promptly with those families where there is regular lateness – special circumstances permitting.

2. asking parents to refrain from requesting early afternoon finishing time for their child/ren unless it is necessary or a special circumstance. If you need to collect your child early from school then you must notify school the day before where practicable.

Please do not be offended if we say “no” to your child leaving school before the end of the school day if you do not have a legitimate reason. We are abiding by the Ministry of Education guidelines.

Please click on the links to read Holy Trinity Catholic Primary School’s Stepped Attendance Response actions for when children are absent from school …

HTCPS Summary of Attendance Management Plan  HTCPS Stepped Attendance Response Activities (1)

In the first instance, families/whānau must be responsible for informing school of any student absences. You are able to do this by entering a notification on HERO under your child’s Attendance page, by emailing the school office – office@holytrinity.school.nz or by phone contact 09 296 9039.

If you know that you are intending for your child to be away from school for a period of time, please request in writing, permission for your child to be absent stating the dates and the reasons for non-attendance.

If we do not know why the children are absent from school, we will follow up with phone calls, texts and emails – if after 5 days of no response or if school is concerned about the numbers of days absent without justified reason, we will then action a referral to the Ministry of Education Attendance Services team.

We are confident that by working together and respecting the Ministry of Education and school attendance expectations and guidelines inclusive of school bell times, we can all ensure our children will have the best possible opportunity for their learning!

Learning Community News …

Learning Community Moana

This week, our Year 6 students began a new Technology project linked to our Concept learning of “Whakapapa” – (our school story and connections).

Each Thursday this term, a Technology teacher from St Ignatius of Loyola Catholic College will work with the class. Students are starting to learn about electrical circuits and will use this knowledge to create a wall hanging that represents an important part of our school’s ‘whakapapa’. Students will explore symbols, patterns, and visual design to show meaning. They will create their artwork on cardboard or wood and include LED lights as part of their design. This project combines creativity, history, culture, and science learning in a meaningful way.

We look forward to seeing their learning develop over the term.

Year 6 Students Camp

We are excited and looking forward to our Year 6 students going on an Education Outside the Classroom Camp experience at Camp Adair in May. Our senior students will be planning and running camp fundraising events across the year to cover the costs. It promises to be a wonderful opportunity for our tamariki to explore the outdoors while growing personal resilience, self confidence and team work!

Emergency Drills

Each term, our school practices the three emergency drills in preparation for anything that might occur. We practise the earthquake drill, the fire drill and the lockdown drill. The Learning Communities have their own practices before the ‘whole school drill’ to ensure that students know to stay calm and follow teacher’s instructions.

Book Club

Kia ora!

Issue 1 of the Book Club catalogue for 2026 is out now.

Book Club is a great way to encourage your tamariki to read at home and build up a library of books your child will reach for again and again. As an added bonus, every order you place earns Scholastic Reward Dollars for the school, which we use to buy books and resources for the library and learning communities.

Your child has hopefully brought home a catalogue, or you can view it at https://scholastic.co.nz/parents/book-club-parents/

To order, simply go to https://scholastic.co.nz/parents/book-club-parents/ and pay by debit or credit card, or you can complete the order form in the catalogue and pay at the school office.

Orders close at 3pm on Thursday 19 February. Orders usually arrive at the school within two weeks of the closing date.

2026 Attendance Dues

Attendance Dues 2026 statements have been electronically sent to families

Please note that there are 3 options for payment of the Attendance Dues and Catholic Special Character Contribution

  2. Automatic Payment to be set up via internet banking to ASB school account
  3. Payment can be made at the school office – cash or Eftpos

Many of our families choose the AP (Automatic Payment) option to make a small payment each week or fortnight which helps families to manage their financial budget for the year. This is a very good option and one that is encouraged by our school. For those families paying by Automatic Payment (AP), please note that 2026 payments must all be completed by 1st December 2026.

Please see Carmel Stewart (Office Administrator) or Peta Lindstrom (Principal) in the strictest confidence if you have any concerns or questions regarding the payment of Attendance Dues. Financial Assistance is available for payment of Attendance Dues.

Attendance Dues Financial Assistance

St Ignatius of Loyola Catholic College – Dedication Mass

This week, some invited Year 6 and Year 5 students attended St Ignatius of Loyola Catholic College’s Dedication Mass. It was a very special Mass because it was the day their new principal officially became principal – Mrs Catherine Bamber-O’Malley. It was also the day where the student leaders were commissioned. There are 8 whānau groups at St Ignatius but I only remember Aubert, Romero and Magdalene.

We all saw one of our Year 6 friends (Year 7 now!). There were a lot of people (students) at St Ignatius that I thought there weren’t going to be enough chairs in the hall! We all had a great time at the Collge and I’m looking forward to going there again! By Lilac – LC Moana

Reminders!

Student Mobile Phones

School Boards have a duty to prohibit the use and access of student mobile phones. Regulation 22 Education (School Board) Regulations 2020, means that all state schools, including integrated state schools, must ensure students do not use or access a phone while they are attending school, including during lunch time and breaks. This includes students who are on a school course/trip or visit outside the school grounds. However, there are exceptions to this specified in the Regulations.

Our Holy Trinity Catholic Primary School Board, with the guidance of SchoolDocs which guides our policy making, ensures it complies with regulations.

Students are not permitted to have their personal phones at school. There are a few exceptions only. This is for students who are using public transport – having a phone with them at this time is a good safety measure. However, there is no other reason for a child to bring their phone to school. If a student is bringing their phone to school, then it must be handed into the school office each morning and collected at the end of the school day. Our Office Admin Team will be contacting families to confirm the need to have phones at school for these children. Thank you for supporting us with this request.

Concerns and Complaints Policy

It is always good practice each year to inform parents and community of the appropriate channel to share concerns or worries. Schools are required to have a Concerns and Complaints Policy in place.  The purpose is to provide clear guidelines for the school community in raising and resolving concerns and complaints.

These procedures enable us to:

  • maintain the best learning environment for our students
  • resolve matters of concern early, if possible
  • respond to feedback and concerns constructively
  • deal with complaints fairly, effectively, and promptly
  • take into account individual circumstances
  • maintain confidentiality
  • preserve school/community relationships and communication
  • monitor and record complaints and concerns about student safety.

Most complaints can be resolved informally by discussions with the people concerned.

  1. Discuss the issue with the right person.
  2. Work towards a resolution.

School policies and procedures are held online with SchoolDocs. Access to this information is shared with you at each student enrolment interview. Please access by logging on to http://holytrinity.schooldocs.co.nz/ – User Name: holytrinity – Password: learnloveserve ConcernsandComplaintsProcess (7)

Public Transport services for 2026 – Reminder by Auckland Transport

Kia ora,
We are reaching out to remind you that with the school year about to begin public transport services will be busier than usual. There will be more people on the roads and taking public transport overall.
Auckland Transport will be monitoring the performance of the public transport network during this period closely and in real time to add more seats when and where possible.
Schools, parents and students can help ease the impact on school journeys during this busy time by:
  • Encouraging students to tag on and off each school bus trip. Tagging data is used by our team to know how many students are onboard each bus so we can make adjustments to school bus timetables and bus sizes.
  • If school buses are not an option for students, they can use urban bus services. AT Journey Planner can help students find the services that will work best for them.
  • Ensure student’s HOP cards are topped up. Children ages 5 to 15 years are eligible for a child concession giving them 40% travel by bus, train or ferry when using their registered AT HOP card.
Have a great start to your year!

BNZ Kiwi Hoops 3×3 Event – South Auckland

Kia ora koutou,

Basketball New Zealand, in partnership with Bank of New Zealand and proudly hosted by Auckland Basketball, is excited to bring to a brand new “BNZ Kiwi Hoops – Hoops and Dreams on Tour”, a BNZ Kiwi Hoops 3×3 event, on Saturday 7th March 2026, at the Bruce Pulman Arena, South Auckland.

BNZ Kiwi Hoops is Basketball New Zealand’s official junior programme designed for tamariki aged 5–13 years old. It focuses on building confidence, teamwork, and fundamental basketball skills through fun, inclusive activities, and gameplay. The programme encourages participation, creativity, and a love for the game—whether kids are just starting out or already dribbling with confidence!

I have added a facebook event and link to the website with more details, but was wondering if you could distribute via your school channels of communication to spread the word about the amazing “free, come and try” event.  It is a day that is going to be a lot of fun and having as many tamariki participate would be amazing.
