Dear Families

On Monday, we gathered as a school family to celebrate a beautiful Easter Liturgy to begin our new school term.

Grateful thanks to Ana Silva, our DRS (Director of Religious Studies) for sharing her reflection and leading us in this beautiful liturgy of Easter celebration …

“Nau mai haere mai and welcome to our Liturgy this morning.  Welcome to another term.  Our faith journey with Jesus during Holy Week saw us remembering his last days and moments. It was a journey of pain and suffering, of dying on a cross.

But Jesus is no longer on that cross. Jesus has risen!

For us as Christians, Easter is a very special celebration, we celebrate and praise God for the gift of the Resurrection of Jesus!

One of the loveliest stories in the Gospel is the one where the Risen Christ joins two of his disciples on the road to Emmaus. He reveals himself to them in the Scriptures and in the ‘breaking of bread’. The story of Emmaus becomes our story as we listen to the Word of God.

Before we begin our liturgy please turn to the person sitting next to you and greet them with the same words that Jesus greeted his disciples, Peace be with you!

One of the mantras shared by Father Tony on Easter Sunday that I would like for all of us to learn to say is this. I say – Jesus is Risen! Alleluia! And you all reply He is Risen indeed. Alleluia!

As Christian people, let’s keep sharing this special Easter mantra to all we meet!

A Busy Term Ahead …

Term 2 is proving to be a very busy term full of school events, parish events, activities and learning experiences. Please keep a close eye on all of the HERO notifications as we invite you, our families, to participate in the exciting events of this term … Mothers Day Liturgy, Holy Trinity Feast Day, Parish/School Mass on Trinity Sunday, Rotuman Language Week, Samoan Language Week, Year 5/6 Gymnastics Skills programmes, Years 0-3 PE Fundamental Skills programme, Year 6 CAMP, Tread Lightly Caravan Environmental science programme, Outdoor Education programmes, PTFA Matariki Breakfast, PTFA Oxford Pies and Cookies Fundraiser, Blue Light Police Disco, sports events and much much more!

We are delighted to be able to welcome further new families, new students and new staff to our school community over the course of this term. We extend a warm welcome and a genuine invitation to you all to be members of Holy Trinity Catholic Primary School. Let us all reach out to our new families and new staff to show and share the Holy Trinity charism of relationship, unity and love through learning ka ako, loving ka aroha and serving ka manaaki in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit!

DRS Report

ANZAC Day

The children in Pompallier whānau led our school today in a beautiful liturgy in commemoration for the upcoming ANZAC Day. We honour the soldiers from the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps who fought at the Gallipoli Campaign during World War I. Many of them were young and far from home, and a large number lost their lives. Remembering them is a way of acknowledging that sacrifice. ANZAC Day has grown to recognise all New Zealanders who have served and died in wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping missions. It connects past and present service. The children prayed for peace, in our home, in our country and in our world. Let us all honour this coming ANZAC Day on Saturday 25 April by wearing our poppies and attending the Dawn Parade near you.

Ode of Remembrance
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

Assembly/Liturgy

Every fortnight we have our whole school liturgy/assembly on Mondays to start the week. However, due to our very busy Week 3, our next assembly will be on Friday 1 May at 9:00am in Taamaua/school hall. You are always welcome to join us for our liturgy/assembly.

Mothers Day

On Friday 8th May, we will be gathering together in Taamaua/school hall at 1:30pm to celebrate and give thanks to God for our wonderful mothers! Our students and staff from Patrick Dunn Whānau will be leading us in our Mother’s Day liturgy so we are inviting all our Holy Trinity mums, grandmothers, godmothers and mother figures to come along and let us honour you for the wonderful person you are in our family.

Priest Visits

It is pleasing to see that Father Tony King-Archer is enjoying the classroom visits and chatting with our tamariki in the Learning Communities. Father Tony visits every Wednesday on odd weeks to our school and our classes are rostered to spend time with him.

Staff/Teacher Only Day Friday 22nd May

School will be closed for students on Friday 22nd May Term 2.

Teachers and Support Staff will be involved in a professional development and learning day about the newly released New Zealand Curriculum Refresh, Mathematics and Statistics Learning Area. This is a Ministry of Education approved Teacher/Staff Only Day.

This teacher-only day will provide our school with a dedicated time to understand and engage with changes across The Mathematics and Statistics Learning area of  the NZ Curriculum. It is an opportunity for our kaitiaki to share ideas and expertise and to grow in our confidence in implementing the refreshed curriculum and assessment changes.

Please make alternative arrangements for your child/ren on this day.

Student Attendance Reminders

As you will be aware through the media, there is a great concern around students attendance at school and the impact this is having on levels of student progress and achievement. The Ministry of Education is requesting schools to have “intervention thresholds” in place so that student attendance is monitored, tracked and intervention strategies are put in place quickly and efficiently to ensure high rates of school attendance for every child.

Thresholds for reporting to Ministry of Education:

Green threshold  1-4 days absence per term = regular attendance

Yellow threshold 5-9 days absence per term = irregular attendance

Orange threshold 9-14 days absence per term = moderate attendance

Red threshold  – 15+ days absence per term = chronic attendance

Student absences and thresholds reached are tracked on HERO – our school’s Student Management System. At each of the required thresholds, we are required to report to the Ministry of Education with school information being collected by the Ministry at 6pm each day.

In the first instance, families/whānau must be responsible for informing school of any student absences. You are able to do this by entering a notification on HERO under your child’s Attendance page, by emailing the school office – office@holytrinity.school.nz or by phone contact 09 296 9039.

If you know that you are intending for your child to be away from school for a period of time, please request in writing, permission for your child to be absent stating the dates and the reasons for non-attendance.

If we do not know why the children are absent from school, we will follow up with phone calls, texts and emails – if after 5 days of no response or if school is concerned about the numbers of days absent without justified reason, we will then action a referral to the Ministry of Education Attendance Services team.

As the first intervention threshold for our school, we will be …
1. monitoring student absences and lateness and we will be communicating promptly with those families where there is absences or regular lateness – special circumstances permitting.

2. asking parents to refrain from requesting early afternoon finishing time for their child/ren unless it is necessary or a special circumstance. If you need to collect your child early from school then you must notify school the day before where practicable.

Please do not be offended if we say “no” to your child leaving school before the end of the school day if you do not have a legitimate reason. We are abiding by the Ministry of Education guidelines.

School begins at 8:50am with morning karakia/prayer – it’s important that the children are at school and have this time for prayer, song, reflection and meditation.

School finishes at 2:50pm with afternoon karakia/prayer – again, it’s important that children remain at school for the full day.

We are confident that by working together and respecting the Ministry of Education and school attendance expectations and guidelines inclusive of school bell times, we can all ensure our children will have the best possible opportunity for their learning!

Teaching and Learning News

Taonga Concept Learning

Last term, we learned about stories of people and places from the past and present that are part of our school whakapapa. These stories help preserve and grow our journey as a Catholic school.

This term, we are building on this learning through our concept of Taonga. We want our learners to understand that the taonga of our Catholic story shapes the way we preserve and continue our journey as people of hope.

To support learners to think critically, we will explore these essential questions:

  • What is the taonga of our Catholic story?
  • How can the taonga of our Catholic story shape us as people of hope?
  • How can the taonga of our story contribute to our journey as people of hope?

By the end of the term, we want our learners to independently use their learning to choose a way to show others how the taonga of our Catholic story can contribute to the way we grow on our journey to learn, love, and serve.

Tread Lightly Caravan – Environmental Science

The Tread Lightly Caravan (TLC) is visiting our school, bringing a mobile environmental classroom with fun, hands-on activities. Through the use of fun interactive exhibits and activities, the TLC experience inspires students to live more environmentally responsible lifestyles. The TLC shows students how everyday choices in an urban context (what we buy, how we travel, what we eat, how we use energy in our homes) can make a huge difference to our natural environment.

This learning links to the Science curriculum and will support students as they begin their inquiry learning about Taonga.

We are looking for parent/caregiver helpers to support students during these interactive sessions. Guidance and instructions will be provided. Sessions run for 50–90 minutes depending on year level.

Please contact your child’s class teacher if you are available to help or would like to know your child’s session time.

Visit the Tread Lightly website www.tread-lightly.org if you would like further information or visit their Facebook page www.facebook.com/treadlightlycaravan

Year 0-3 Fundamental Skills

Every Thursday for the first six weeks of this term, our Year 0-3 students will be working with Counties Manukau Sports. CMS coaches facilitate sessions to develop and enhance children’s fundamental movement skills – such as, balancing, jumping, throwing, catching, hopping and skipping in a fun and supportive environment. On the last week of the programme, they will have a Bike Balance Day where students are supported in riding bikes in a safe way and learning to balance themselves through core stability and body control.

Learning Community News

Learning Community Newsletters

Our kaitiaki are currently preparing a Learning Community newsletter to share information about Term 2 learning and weekly organisation. This will be published on Hero next Friday.

Please look out for the notification and take the time to read it so you are well informed about what is happening at school for your child.

Whenua

This term, we will be busy learning about Taonga (treasure). Taonga in our own lives and the taonga within our school story. Learners will have the opportunity to share their personal treasures, learn about the values and history that shape our school, and reflect on how we can care for and respect these important taonga. All our taonga learning will be weaved through; science, visual arts, writing, reading and RE.

Throughout weeks 1-5 on a Thursday, learners will be exploring fundamental movement skills and in week 6 they will end with a bike balance day. Learners are required to wear their PE gear. They need to come to school in full school uniform and get changed at school.

Ngahere

This term, LC Ngahere will be exploring the special concept of taonga. A taonga is something precious that we treasure and care for. It can be something we can hold, like a photo or a gift, or something we cannot see, like a memory, a story, or our faith. In Science, we will be exploring the seasons as a taonga of God’s creation. Students will learn about the changes that happen throughout the year and how each season provides special gifts, such as new growth, warmth, harvest, and rest. We will discuss how caring for our environment shows respect for this taonga and helps us appreciate the beauty of the natural world.

In Visual Arts, students will explore how we can use different elements such as colour, shape, line, texture, and space to tell stories about what matters to us. They will create their own artworks to represent their personal taonga and our shared class stories. It will be wonderful to see their creativity and the meaningful ways they express their ideas.

We will also connect our learning to our Catholic identity by reflecting on how our faith, our relationship with God, and the stories of Jesus are taonga that guide and shape our lives. Students will learn that caring for these treasures means living with kindness, love, and respect for others. You can support this learning at home by talking with your child about what taonga means in your family and by noticing and discussing the changes in the seasons together. Sharing stories, traditions, or special objects will help strengthen their understanding and connection.

Throughout Weeks 1–5, on Thursdays, learners will be exploring fundamental movement skills. In Week 6, they will conclude with a Bike Balance Day. Learners are required to wear their PE gear for these sessions. They should come to school in full school uniform and will get changed into their PE gear at school.

Awa

Learning Community Awa has had a fantastic first week back! We have been unpacking what ‘Taonga’ is and shared what was a taonga for each of us – this helped us to identify the taonga within our school story, Following the Footsteps. We learnt that we are all scientists as we are all curious learners and discussed the scientific thinking process – we are looking forward to carrying out this process with our own inquiry’s. We also learnt to name the elements of art and share what each element is about.

Maunga

This term, we are adding to our learning about Journey and identifying what Taonga is and how this is reflected in our school whakapapa.  Week 1, we remember the events of Easter and begin with our liturgy on Monday morning, the first day of school. For ANZAC we will acknowledge the people who were part of WW1 and WW2 and any wars that have impacted our lives.

In the coming weeks, our Year 5 tamariki will be jumping alongside Moana in Gymnastics and learning some fantastic skills to keep themselves fit, supple and energised through movement. To make this learning successful, we need your support. Please contact Mrs Chung or Mrs Davies and join us on Thursday mornings to monitor a group as they move through each station.

Cultural Groups will begin in Week 4, and this will be an exciting time for our learners and kaitiaki to be part of a new cultural experience. So we will keep you posted on our progress.

Visual art is our focus this term, and there will be lots of learning of how to use the elements of pencil, paint, dye and pastel to create some amazing artworks using recycled materials.

Moana

We have a very busy term ahead of us in LC Moana.

Starting in Week 2 and mostly on Thursdays, the Year 5s and 6s will be attending gymnastics sessions at Bruce Pulman Park. Please check HERO notices and your emails to find out more about them. These sessions form part of our PE and Health curriculum, and they help our learners develop foundational skills in movement as well as body awareness, spatial awareness, and how to move around safely.

If you are able to help out with supervision of our sessions, please let a kaitiaki in LC Moana or LC Maunga know as soon as possible. And don’t worry – you are not expected to do the gymnastics routines too!

In Week 5, our Year 6s will be going to Camp Adair in the Hunuas. It’s going to be a fabulous opportunity for our Year 6s to show resilience and confidence, and develop a greater understanding of the outdoors while creating lifelong memories. Thank you to our school community and the PTFA for your help with our first fundraising effort last term with iceblock sales. We will be holding more fundraisers throughout the school year, including the Bluelight Disco happening on Monday 4 May.

Our concept this term is Taonga, and for Science we will be learning about how a taonga of our school whakapapa, our whānau patrons, used navigation skills and knowledge of the weather to follow God’s plan and come to New Zealand. In RE we’ll be learning about the taonga of our Saints and why we are all saints. We will also be exploring the elements of the Visual Arts and how the Visual Arts can help us share and preserve taonga.

Bluelight Disco

Our Year 6 students are fundraising for their Camp this term. One of their fundraising events is the Bluelight Disco which is in partnership with the New Zealand Police. The Bluelight Disco will be on Monday 4th May in Taamaua/school hall at lunchtime (1:00pm – 1:40pm). Students will need to bring $2 for the disco. Half of the money will go towards NZ Police and the other half will go towards Camp. We look forward to having some time with the NZ Police as they come in to run our lunchtime Disco for us.

Sports News

Welcome back to Term 2

We are excited to welcome everyone back for Term 2! This term promises to be filled with fun and engaging sports activities that will help our students stay active and healthy.

Our school netball teams are currently training hard to prepare for the upcoming netball competitions. A big thank you to all the whānau who have taken charge and supported the team’s efforts. Your help and encouragement mean a lot to our tamariki!

As we begin this new term, let’s remind our children about the importance of keeping our school’s sports equipment safe and using it correctly. Responsible behaviour helps create a positive environment for everyone to learn and grow.

Once again, we kindly ask for your continued support to make this term a successful and enjoyable one for all our students. Together, we can make a difference!

Thank you for your ongoing partnership.

Year 5/6 Gymnastics Programme at Bruce Pulman Park Recreation Centre

We are excited to inform you that this term, Year 5 and 6 students will be participating in a Gymnastics programme at Bruce Pulman Park Recreation Centre. The sessions will take place every Thursday, starting from Week 1, and will continue throughout the term until Week 10.
This initiative aims to promote essential physical development skills such as strength, flexibility, balance, and coordination. Additionally, it is designed to foster important mental skills including discipline, self-confidence, and resilience. Gymnastics is widely regarded as a key activity for enhancing cognitive function, as it challenges students to think critically and plan their movements. It also provides a valuable social outlet, teaching students teamwork, respect for others, and emotional regulation.
We would like to extend a huge thank you to the Whānau members who have volunteered their time to help us run these gymnastics sessions smoothly. Your support is truly appreciated, and your dedication makes a positive difference in our students’ learning experiences. You are genuinely amazing!
We look forward to seeing our students grow physically, mentally, and socially through this exciting programme. If you have any questions or would like to volunteer, please feel free to contact LC Moana Kaitiaki.
Ngā mihi,
Varun Kumar

Hauora/WellBeing News

Travelwise

We hope you’ve all had a restful holiday break and managed to stay safe, dry, and warm during the recent weather. With autumn now upon us, we’re looking forward to an exciting term ahead.

We are pleased to share some great news from Auckland Transport. From over 850 survey responses (teachers and parents), our school was randomly selected in the WoW Week prize draw—winning $500!

This is wonderful motivation for us to continue walking or wheeling to school. Staying active not only supports our health and wellbeing but also helps our environment. Our school Travelwise team will continue to oversee and encourage students who walk or wheel to school. Every fortnight, we will draw a name, and the winner will receive a prize from the Travelwise box.

In Week 3 (4th–10th May 2026), we will be celebrating Road Safety Week with the theme: “Be a Road Safety Hero.”

Remember – “Travelwise With Pride”

Awhi Team

Our peer mediators, known as the Awhi Team, are out in the playground at break times. Their job is to help tamariki who may be having minor conflict find solutions that leave everyone feeling happy and empowered. This term the Awhi Team hopes to visit the learning communities to share information about peer mediation, run some activities at lunch times, and encourage their schoolmates to make good choices.
While they are on duty, the peer mediators are also looking out for learners who are showing the school’s Gospel values. This week and next, they are looking for learners who are showing unity/kotahitanga and respect/manaakitia by putting away the sports gear when they are finished playing with it. This shows respect for school property, and unity because then it’s easier for other children to find the equipment, and it makes the sports monitors’ jobs easier too!
Please encourage your child to use the peer mediators’ services if they have a small problem in the playground, and to show respect and unity by putting away the sports gear when they are finished with it.
Ngā mihi,
Ms Gill

Book Club

Kia ora whānau.
Issue 3 of the Book Club catalogue is out now.
There are lots of reasons why it’s great to order from the Book Club. This issue has over 30 items that are $6 or less, making it just that little bit easier to encourage the love of reading in your home. Ordering from the Book Club also earns our school reward dollars that we spend on resources for the learning communities and books for the school library. And of course, bringing books into your home helps your child see that books are a taonga and that reading is something to be valued.
You can order online at https://scholastic.co.nz/parents/book-club-parents/ or pay at the school office.
Orders close at 3pm on Friday 1 May.

Term 2 Attendance Dues – Now Due

Term 2 Attendance Dues are now due. Financial statements will be sent out by HERO next week.  All Term 2 Dues must be paid in full unless you are making regular automatic payments. We are required to send these funds to the Diocese each month.

Please note that there are 3 options for payment of the Attendance Dues and Catholic Special Character Contribution

  1. Full amount paid by Internet Banking to ASB school account – details for payment are on the statement.
  2. Automatic Payment to be set up via internet banking to ASB school account
  3. Payment can be made at the school office – cash or Eftpos

Many of our families choose the AP (Automatic Payment) option to make a small payment each week or fortnight which helps families to manage their financial budget for the year. This is a very good option and one that is encouraged by our school. For those families paying by Automatic Payment (AP), please note that 2026 payments must all be completed by 1st December 2026.

Please see Carmel Stewart (Office Administrator) or Peta Lindstrom (Principal) in the strictest confidence if you have any concerns or questions regarding the payment of Attendance Dues.

Financial Assistance is available for payment of Attendance Dues.

Managing our School Roll

Holy Trinity is now “managing” our school roll for 2026. Some of our learning spaces and year levels are now at  capacity for the year. This includes students who are already pre-enrolled for the 2026 year. The lack of further buildings/learning community spaces means we are in a position of having to manage school enrolments for new inquiries. Families are welcome to place their child on the preference waiting list for 2027 – this does not guarantee a placement for 2027 as we will only be able to accept siblings as a first priority.
A decision will be made for 2027 enrolments by 30 September 2026. Further “Enrolment Information” is on our school website. If a school family or associated family is inquiring about enrolment this year 2026, then you must meet with the Principal, Miss Lindstrom as soon as possible.

Earth Day 2026 – Electronics Recycling

Earth Day 2026 is upon us!  Earth Day is celebrated each year to help raise awareness around environmental issues and promoting sustainable practices, which includes recycling as a vital element of this process.

This encourages everyone to take meaningful steps towards a more sustainable world, and this is where your school / centre can help:

By recycling your old phone, iPad, tablet or computer, or passing it on to someone else, you extend its life span and prevent it from ending up in landfill.

Please contact Swapkit NZ @ recycling@swapkit.co.nz if you need a new collection box, or if you want to send the devices you have already collected.  Also, please see attached poster for you to print off and display in your office.

Thank you so much for your continued support of the RE:MOBILE Mobile Phone Recycling Campaign, which helps raise funds for Sustainable Coastlines.  It is very much appreciated.

Southern Path Park Run

Kia ora,

I’m reaching out on behalf of our parkrun team. Southern Path parkrun in Takanini, Auckland is a free, weekly 5km walk/jog/run held every Saturday morning, and we are looking to connect with local schools who may have students seeking volunteer opportunities.

parkrun is a great fit for students working towards service-based programmes such as the Duke of Edinburgh Award or William Pike Challenge, as well as those needing to complete school volunteer hours.

We provide a safe and supportive environment where students can contribute to a community event run entirely by volunteers, while developing confidence, teamwork, and leadership skills. Volunteer roles are varied and include marshalling, timekeeping, barcode scanning, and general event support.

Students aged 4–14 can volunteer alongside a parent or caregiver. Students aged 14 and over are able to take on more independent roles (excluding marshalling positions).

Volunteer commitments are flexible, typically ranging from 15–90 minutes on a Saturday morning. Our team is experienced in verifying volunteer hours, with many students having successfully completed their requirements with Southern Path parkrun.

I’ve attached a short flyer with more information. We would greatly appreciate it if you could share this with your staff and students, or include it in your school newsletter. Volunteering opportunities at Southern Path parkrun (1)

If you have any questions or would like to discuss how we can support your students, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
