Dear Parents

Our Board of Trustees members have been looking at the document “The Catholic Education of School-Age Children” written by the New Zealand Catholic Bishops. In particular we have been reading and reflecting on the goals of a Catholic School and the”WHY” of “why we built this school”. Being a community of Christ means helping to form Christ in the lives of others – we strive to do this by being a place where we encounter the living God, where we grow in knowledge and understandings of Christ’s teachings and where we are nurtured and strengthened to develop and grow as Christian witnesses. (paraphrased from “The Catholic Education of School-Age Children”)

As you read through our school newsletter today, take time to reflect on the sharing of school information on actions, activities and events happening within our community … and ask yourself … are we endeavouring to work towards the goals of a Catholic School?

DRS NEWS

Sacrament – Hakarameta

We are coming to the end of the God/Te Atua Strand in our Religious Education programme so your child will be bringing their Religious Education books home to share their learning with you.  We’ll be delving into our Sacrament/Hakarameta Strand from next week as we are reminded of God’s holiness in the people, places and things around us.  The older children will be looking at the Sacraments of the Church especially the Healing Sacraments of Reconciliation and Anointing of the Sick.

Father’s Day Liturgy

dadNext week on Friday 1 September, we’ll be celebrating Father’s Day Liturgy together in Taamaua at 2:15pm.  We invite all our families especially our fathers, grandfathers and all the father figures of our Holy Trinity Whanau. Hope to see you all there!

Social Justice Week – Can Drive

Social JusticeOn Week 8 (Monday 11 September – Friday 15 September) we will be joining all the Primary Catholic Schools in Aotearoa New Zealand to celebrate ‘Social Justice Week’.  We are invited to take up Pope Francis’ challenge of “Weaving Bonds of Belonging” within our school and wider community.  One of the ways that we’ll be doing this, is “outreach” through a Can Drive.  Throughout the week, students and staff are encouraged to bring in a can of food to add to a collection.  At the end of the week, all the cans donated will be collected and delivered to St Vincent de Paul and the Mercy Hospice.  We’ll also be doing Social Justice activities in our own Learning Communities during this week.  A wonderful way of bringing Mary MacKillop’s words to life of “seeing a need and doing something about it”.  We are all called to serve and see the world with eyes of love by reaching out to those in need.Poster 1.2 (2017) (1)

Visitors to our School

IMG_9674Over the next few weeks , we will be hosting a number of visitors to our school. Some people are participants attending workshops being held here on site and others are travelling specifically to spend time, enjoying our new school environment and exploring our Learning Communities. We have a group of Australian Principals visiting on Monday 4th September from 9:15am. We will be welcoming them with a Haka Powhiri and then sharing with them our Holy Trinity charism, culture, innovative learning spaces and teaching/learning programmes.  Moana students welcomed visiting teachers yesterday with a “rousing” school haka which was warmly received by all.

Scholastic Book Club

The latest issue is due to arrive shortly and all students will be sent home with a catalogue. Every order earns rewards for our school which will then help us buy more books for our library. It’s a great way to support our school while helping develop the love of reading in your child.

You will be able to place an order in two ways:

a) order online (pay by credit card) OR

b) fill in the order form in the catalogue and hand in the form and your payment (cash or EFTPOS) to the school office.

More details will be sent out via Linc-Ed when the catalogue is due to be sent home. For any questions regarding the Book Club, feel free to email Kirstie at bookclub@holytrinity.school.nz

Playground Activities

IMG_3487The students are making the most of these finer winter days and enjoying the variety of court markings on the asphalt area. The new outdoors chess set is being put to good use with much discussion from all involved about the next successful winning “move”.

School Zumba and Jump Jam Fitness

IMG_9678

On Tuesday and Friday mornings, our school has been enjoying Zumba and Jump Jam fitness in Taamaua at 9:00am.  It’s a fun way of starting off the day with some dancing exercises run by our kaitiaki.  You’re welcome to come along and join in.

Friday 25th August is Daffodil Day

Daffodil-Day-Heading-300x130Thank you everyone for your wonderful support for this worthy cause. It was lovely to see our students wearing their daffodil flower which is a ‘symbol of hope’ and used by cancer organisations all over the world. We are proud to say that we have raised $144.70 for the Cancer Society.

Learning Communities

Education Outside the Classroom

In Week 7, on Tuesday the 5th of September Learning Community Moana will be heading down to Lakewood Lodge, near Huntly, for a day of outdoor activities. Horse games, kayaking and flying fox to name a few! This will be a full day out of the classroom, travelling by bus to and from school. Exploring the outdoors and trying new experiences is a great way for students to learn new things about the world and themselves. We are all looking forward to this action packed day.

Learning Communities Whenua and Awa have been learning about Creation/Living World and connecting it with our concept of Respect/Manaakitia.

Whenua have been practising showing “manaakitia/respect” in our learning community. We show respect by working together nicely and using our equipment properly. We love learning together!

August August 2

In Awa we have been learning about “Respect/Manaakitia” and have been looking at our world and all the gifts God has given us by creating such a beautiful world. We are learning to respect these gifts by taking care of the plants and animals around us. We would like to enhance the beauty of our school and we are working on ways to do this.

We will be visiting King’s Plant Barn to talk about different types of plants and their needs and also thinking about how we could use this learning to show Respect/Manaakitia in our school environment.

THANK YOU

A very big THANK YOU to all our school community for your wonderful participation in our very first School Cross Country event. A special thanks to our Mums, Dads and Grandparents who helped with setting up, marshalling, organisation, barbecuing and the sausage sizzle hospitality. Thanks also to Mr Lloyd Benliro for being chief photographer on the day and for sharing his photos on google drive/album. It was a great day for all!
Thank you to those families who have generously donated books from home to our school library and learning communities – they will certainly be enjoyed!

Congratulations

sKids (Safe Kids in Daily Supervision) are the Before and After School Care providers for our school families. A hearty congratulations to Rose and Luke King and the daily supervisors for their recent major award presented to them for having the “Best Performing Site at Holy Trinity Catholic Primary School”. We are delighted for you and the team and it is a great acknowledgement of the care you show for our children each day.

Papakura Principals Association Staff Appreciation Day

The Papakura Principals Association has initiated a Staff Appreciation Day to be held on Friday 1 September. This is a way of encouraging BoTs, children, families and the community to show appreciation for the staff in their school. This can be done through a kind word, a positive post, a handmade card, a painting from home, a smile and a thank you … these kind gestures make our school staff’s day. School staff are special people … they teach, encourage, nurture, mentor, guide, praise, influence, mentor, share, inspire and love and care for our children each day. As a way of showing their appreciation, our Board of Trustees will be providing morning tea for all of our staff this coming Friday!
