Dear Families

Welcome to a very busy and active Term 2! We were delighted to be able to welcome further new families, new students and new staff to our school community on Monday. It is an honour to be able to extend a warm welcome, a genuine invitation to be members of Holy Trinity Catholic Primary School and to offer hospitality and inclusiveness through a rousing school whakatau performed by our students and staff.  Let us all reach out to our new families and new staff to show and share the Holy Trinity charism of relationship, unity and love through learning ka ako, loving ka aroha and serving ka manaaki in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit!

A busy term ahead …

Term 2 is proving to be a very busy term full of school events, parish events, activities and learning experiences. Please keep a close eye on all of the HERO notifications as we invite you, our families, to participate in the exciting events of this term … Holy Trinity Feast Day, Parish/School Mass on Trinity Sunday, Rotuman Language Week, Samoan Language Week, Year 5/6 CAMP, Fundamental Skills programmes, Outdoor Education programmes, PTFA Matariki Breakfast and PTFA Disco Night, sports events and much much more!

Term 2 Staffing Update

Welcome to …

We are excited to be warmly welcoming four new teachers to our school whānau – in Learning Community Awa Year 0/1 and in Learning Community Maunga Year 4!

Mrs Esther Anitelea has joined with us this term to work alongside Mrs Kaur and Mrs Davies in Learning Community Maunga/Year 4 before Mrs Kaur leaves us on the 10th May. Esther is a very experienced teacher/kaitiaki, having taught at Holy Cross School for many years and in more recent times has been relieving in local catholic schools. We are looking forward to the many talents and gifts that Esther has to share with us.

Due to continued roll growth in our Year 0/1 area of the school, we have Ms Carmel Stewart (a different person to our Mrs Carmel Stewart in the Office!) and Mrs Clare Williams join with us in a full-time shared teaching position. Ms Stewart will work 3 days and Mrs Williams 2 days in this teaching role. They will be joining the Learning Community Awa team. We are thrilled to have both Carmel and Clare working with us – they have previously worked in our school in their capacity as Resource Teachers for Learning and Behaviour (RTLB) so they know us, the children and our families very well. We are extremely blessed to have such experienced and knowledgeable personnel as staff members.

We also extend a warm welcome to Mrs Sydney Buzmion who will also be a kaitiaki/teacher in Learning Community Awa! Sydney is taking on this teaching role as parental leave cover for Mrs Danielle Clarivette. Sydney is a parent of our school so it is wonderful to have her join with us as she brings her own expertise and teaching skills from her Primary and Early Childhood teaching backgrounds.

We are thankful to be able to appoint competent, caring and committed teaching staff to our school community. We look forward to all the gifts, talents and teaching strengths that they will bring to our dedicated staff team!

Farewell to …

Mrs Amandeep Kaur, Learning Community Maunga kaitiaki/teacher. We are very sad to be losing Aman from our teaching team – she has been a very dedicated, committed and capable teacher. Aman joined our school community as a ‘provisionally registered teacher’ just starting out in her NZ school teaching journey. Over these past 3 years we have seen her grow and blossom into a fully registered teacher, taking on leadership and responsibility roles and undertaking these with a developing skillset and expertise. Aman is moving to a school closer to her home due to a change in family circumstances. THANK YOU Aman for your willingness to serve our school community and for your valuable contributions to our school family as a teacher/kaitiaki and colleague.

Blessings to …

Mrs Danielle Clarivette who leaves us in Week 4 of Term 2 to begin preparations for welcoming her new little family member in June. Our love and prayers go with you Danielle, as you wait and prepare for your new baby. We ask our Mother, Mary to watch over you as you await the birth of your child. May you be blessed with the courage and faith of Mary, always listening to God’s will and trusting in God’s loving care.

Congratulations to …

Miss Alana Gaynor who married her partner Sam, in the April holidays. Miss Gaynor is now … Mrs Sherlock! We look forward to celebrating Mrs Sherlock’s special wedding occasion as a school family!

We pray ..
May our God of Love
Keep you of one heart in love for one another,
May the peace of Christ dwell in you
and abide always in your home.
Amen.

Mothers Day Liturgy

Next Friday 10 May at 1:30pm, our students and staff from Aubert Whānau will be leading a beautiful Mothers Day liturgy to bless and give thanks to God for our wonderful mums! We are inviting all our school whānau to come along and celebrate with us as we take this opportunity to show our mothers how much we love and appreciate them. We look forward to seeing you there.

Priest Class Visits

Our tamariki have been delighted to have had Father Mathew Vadakkevettuvazhiyil come in for a class visit on Wednesday this week. Fr Mathew visits our learning communities every odd week on Wednesdays and stays for morning tea with the staff. It’s always wonderful to have him present at school and spending time in the class talking with the children and for the children to be sharing their learning with him.

Holy Trinity Feast Day Mass/Celebration

Our school will be having a School Parish Mass on Trinity Sunday, Sunday 26 May at 10:30am at St Mary’s Church, Papakura. Our students will be participating in the Mass with different roles and we encourage all our Holy Trinity whānau to come along and celebrate our Parish Mass with us. We will have a light morning tea after Mass and we’ll be asking our families to please provide a plate of finger food to share as we celebrate with our Parish community.

We will have our own school’s Trinity Feast Day celebration at school on Friday 24 May. You are invited to come and spend the morning with us as Patrick Dunn Whānau leads our Trinity liturgy in Taamaua/school hall at 9:00am. Our children will be having special activities in their Whānau groups and finally, we will end our school celebration with the Trinity’s Got Talent Show in the afternoon.

2024 Teacher Only Days

Please take note of the 2024 Teacher Only Days. School will be closed for students on Friday 7th June and Friday 15th November.

Teachers and Support Staff will be involved in a professional development and learning day about the newly released New Zealand Curriculum Refresh. The Ministry of Education has granted this time/day to schools to allow teachers to work with the new document – to understand why changes have been made and to plan for the implication for our current Holy Trinity localised curriculum teaching and learning programme.

Please make alternative arrangements for your child/ren for these days.

Alpha Programme – St Mary’s Parish

You’re invited to the St Mary’s Parish Alpha Programme – a time of exploring the faith, asking questions and sharing views! Alpha is a series of sessions exploring the Christian faith, open to all. Each session includes food, video and discussion where you can share your thoughts and ask questions.

The first introductory session commences this Sunday 5th May 12:00/noon in Taamaua/School Hall
Holy Trinity Catholic Primary School.

Trinity’s Got Talent

Trinity’s Got Talent Show – Holy Trinity School’s Feast Day Celebrations

After our Liturgy in the morning, we will be ending our day with a performance sharing the gifts and talents of our children. This is our annual Trinity’s Got Talent Show in Taamaua!!!!

Please do encourage your child/children to participate in the Trinity’s Got Talent Show. They just need to share their proposed item with their teacher who will sign off the entry form and pop it in the box in the Office. We’re looking for performers who can sing, dance, play an instrument, juggle, tell jokes OR generally have lots of talent to share with us!

Looking forward to a truly special day on Friday 24th May as we celebrate being a Holy Trinity School!

Pasifika Talanoa Fono

Kia ora, Tālofa lava, Mālo aupito, Noa‘ia, Fakaalofa Atu, Ko na mauri, Tālofa Ni and warm pacific greetings to you all.

Concept Learning – Curiosity

This term, our students will be engaged in concept learning centered around ‘Curiosity’. We want our learners to understand that ‘curiosity’ inspires us to question and seek new knowledge, enriching the taonga of our stories and empowering our mission.

The essential questions that will guide and support learners are:

How can curiosity enrich the taonga of our stories?

How can curiosity empower our mission?

Students will use their learning about curiosity to explore and investigate their own curiosity, particularly focusing on how our scientific discoveries have contributed to building new knowledge. This exploration will not only enrich the taonga of our stories but also empower our mission for ourselves and others. The main curriculum learning areas are Science, Visual Arts, and Health, providing students with varied opportunities to deepen their understanding of curiosity.

Craft Lab – Outdoor Education Programme

Thursday 16th May – Year 4
Friday 17th May – Year 3

On May 16th-17th, Learning Communities Ngahere and Maunga will participate in Craft Lab, an outdoor education programme. The mission of Craft Lab is to connect children and families to nature through fun, exploration and crafting with natural materials, promoting well-being and enriching learning experiences. This Outdoor Education programme is part of our Health and Physical Education curriculum and will take place at school from 9am to 2:50pm. It is organized by Craft Lab NZ Education Outdoors. During the programme, students will learn bush crafts such as knot tying, flax crafts, kite making, and making a bush treat.

Duffy Reading Champion Award

At our Week 3 Assembly on Monday 13 May, I will be presenting an award to an amazing adult in our HTCPS community who encourages children to read. To find out who to present the award to, I am looking for nominations from our learners.
I’d love for our learners to think about an adult who is always encouraging them to read. It might be their parent or caregiver, a big brother or sister, Grandma or Grandpa, a sKids adult, or a kaitiaki here at school!

Your child can nominate their adult in any way they like – a video, an email, a poster, a powerpoint presentation, a letter … be creative! Their entry needs to tell me why their chosen adult deserves to be our Duffy Reading Champion. Just make sure I receive nominations before 3pm on Wednesday 8 May. They can be emailed to me or dropped off to LC Moana.

I will contact the winner on the 9th of May, so can you please make sure the entry clearly states the first and last names of their nominated person, and their email address or phone number.

I look forward to seeing some amazing nominations about some amazing people!

Ngā mihi,

Ms Kirstie Gill

Learning Community News

Learning Community Termly Newsletters

Please keep an eye out for each of the Learning Community newsletters, which will be published on HERO by Friday 10th May. It’s crucial that you read the newsletter to stay informed about what’s happening in Term 2. Kaitiaki will provide detailed information about learning across the different curriculum areas, homework coming home each night, when your child is expected to bring their P.E. gear to school etc.

Learning Community Awa

This term we are learning about ‘Curiosity’ through Science and The Arts. In Science we are using the KWHLAQ inquiry model to learn and share what we are curious about. We are exploring different stories such as Jesus Lost in the Temple, Jesus and Zeccheau, Jesus Feeds 5000 and our Korero Pūrākau/Story telling ‘Noah’s Ark’ from last term. Through these stories, we are also learning in Religious Education about how we are part of the Church as well as learning about ‘feelings and emotions’ which are a part of our Health and P.E. curriculum for this term. Learners also share their ‘curiosity’ through dress-ups as a character of their choice.

In Arts, we are learning about different visual art forms such as drawing, sculpture, painting and collage to explore and share our curiosities about the stories.

We use our online Wai Ako programme to learn te reo māori with a focus on knowing and using māori greetings and farewells.

What a good start to the term with Fr. Mathew visiting us on Wednesday. Fr. Mathew discussed with us the story of Jesus Lost at the Temple and Noah’s Ark. Father talked about how we want to belong to the family and its importance. Father talked about feelings of sadness and worry if someone from the family was lost just like Mary and Joseph felt when Jesus was not with them to return home after their visit to Jerusalem.

We take this opportunity to thank our parents for sharing the family photographs for the foyer display.

Learning Community Whenua

In  Learning Community Whenua, as part of our ‘Curiosity’ concept, our learners will be investigating their curiosities using their scientific thinking to enrich the taonga of our Creation story and how their curiosity empowers mission. We will be  integrating  our ‘Curiosity’ learning in writing and  Religious Education over the next  few weeks. Kaitiaki and tamariki enjoyed listening to the parable story of how Jesus walked on water told by Father Mathew and especially the story about how Jesus calmed the storm while his disciples were taking him across the seas.  They learned that when they feel afraid or scared they can turn to Jesus and ask him to calm their fears and worries too. We are learning about our special heavenly mother, Mother Mary and how she is so similar to our own mothers, by saying the Rosary every morning during the month of May and writing Mother’s Day poems.

Thank you to all parents who continue to send food for our school Pātaka Kai.

Learning Community Ngahere

Ngahere has had a fantastic start to Term 2! We have been learning about the scientific thinking process as well as identifying the science that is all around us. Seeing ourselves as scientists has helped us to explore the idea of ‘navigation’ and the way we can use stars as a navigation tool. We are working towards sharing our own stories about the stars and comparing our curiosities from the stories we share. We have also been learning about holiness and wholeness, we know there are many Bible stories that share Jesus’ message of holiness. We have been reading some of the parables Jesus told and have been reflecting on the parables while making connections to our own lives so that we can put the messages Jesus teaches us into action.

Learning Community Maunga

In LC Maunga, learners have been reviewing the stories they have shared through Korero Pūrākau during the Term 1. Tamariki are curious to identify the science connections to their stories to build their scientific knowledge. Learners have learnt about different strands of science. This enables them to find science connections to their stories. As Science Investigators, learners will be investigating their stories further through the lens of science. Towards the end of the term, students will present their studies through visual arts.

We are also learning to find the Bible reading using scripture references. Using this knowledge, we have been finding Jesus’ stories to read in our groups and reflecting on them to see how these stories inspire us to follow His footsteps and carry on the Church’s mission.

Learning Community Moana

This term our concept is ‘Curiosity’ with a focus on Science Curriculum. As part of Science learning, our students will be exploring and learning about the significance of New Zealand’s native bush; some of which was removed during the building of Great South Road. We will be visiting Kirks Bush in Papakura which is a remnant of the bush that existed here prior to settlement. We will also be visiting Pukekiwiriki which is a local place mentioned in our school’s Papakura Haka, which we often chant in our whakatau when welcoming new families and staff to our school.  We look forward to another amazing experience outside the classroom.

Students had their first of six ‘Fundamental Movement Skills’ gymnastics sessions this week.  They were fortunate enough to be invited to participate in this school initiative at Bruce Pulman Recreation Centre in Takanini.  The activities focus on goal setting as well as character and confidence building.  It also allows students to think critically, develop coordination, improve balance while building full body strength and flexibility.  We look forward to the next sessions!

We are all looking forward to our Camp in Week 5 at Camp Adair, Hunua.  This is an awesome opportunity for students to engage in activities that will challenge their own comfort, build their resilience, commune with nature, with each other and with God and to take risks and build character.  This camp is part of the Health and Physical Education curriculum.  All the outdoor activities will be supervised by qualified and trained instructors supplied by the Camp.  Activities will challenge our students to take risks; learn, extend and enhance skills, strategies and abilities that they would add to their personal kete on their journey of life.

Support Staff Week

Support Staff Week is coming up in Week 3, from Monday 13th May! Support Staff Week is a celebration to ‘awhi/praise and acknowledge’ all of our Learning Assistants, Office Administration Staff and Mr Stewart, our Caretaker for all the amazing work that they do in our school.

Our Support Staff are incredible – their roles can be demanding and busy and yet every day, our Support Staff team arrive at school with smiles on their faces, warm hearts and happy, positive attitudes ready to be welcoming, supportive and helpful – serving our school community through their commitment and dedication to their particular role – we are truly Blessed!

We are looking forward to Support Staff Week as it is a great way for our school to celebrate, appreciate and honour our wonderful support staff.

Ka mau te wehi – you are amazing!

Awhi Team Peer Mediation

Part of learning about peer mediation at HTCPS is knowing the basic peer mediation process. This is important so that learners know what to expect when they go to the Awhi Team peer mediators for help.
The peer mediators do not begin the process unless both disputants agree to take part, and the disputants must also agree to follow the rules of mediation.
What’s great about peer mediation is the solution to the conflict comes from the disputants; they have ownership of the process as the Awhi Team are just there to guide them. The Awhi Team will also check in with the disputants at a later time to make sure the solution is still working.
Please encourage your child to go to the Awhi Team peer mediators if they have a minor conflict in the playground. The Awhi Team are easy to find as they are wearing green vests.

Paataka Kai

In Term 1, we introduced the pūrākau within the context of paataka kai. We’ve been delighted by the incredible response from both students and families, who generously donated food items. These donations have helped provide lunches for students who either forgot their lunch or had eaten all their food before lunchtime. We appreciate your support always and kindly request your assistance in contributing food items to help replenish our paataka kai.

Property Update …

You will have noticed the new concrete pathway from Kapowai Boulevard into the school grounds and across the field to the school courts! This work was undertaken in the recent holidays in the hope that the new pathway will help with keeping shoes clean and dry during the winter months of wet fields etc.

The Catholic Diocese of Auckland (CDA) has also had a contracting ‘concrete’ team in to dig out the foundations and lay a concrete pad in preparation for a new PE storage shed in the grass area beside the end of LC Moana and LC Awa. Having the storage shed will provide much needed space for our PE (physical education) equipment and materials and also for the day to day play equipment to be stored in a way that is easily accessible and readily available for students to use.

2024 Attendance Dues Payments

Term 2 Attendance Dues are now due for payment. Attendance Dues statements have been sent to all families this week, via the Finance portal on the HERO app, updating your current financial position.

Please note that there are 3 options for payment of the Attendance Dues and Catholic Special Character Contribution

  1. Full amount paid by Internet Banking to ASB school account – details for payment are on the statement.
  2. Automatic Payment to be set up via internet banking to ASB school account
  3. Payment can be made at the school office – cash or Eftpos

Many of our families choose the AP (Automatic Payment) option to make a small payment each week or fortnight which helps families to manage their financial budget for the year. This is a very good option and one that is encouraged by our school. For those families paying by Automatic Payment (AP), please note that 2024 payments must all be completed by 1st December 2024.

Please see Carmel Stewart (Office Administrator) or Peta Lindstrom (Principal) in the strictest confidence if you have any concerns or questions regarding the payment of Attendance Dues.

Financial Assistance is available for payment of Attendance Dues.

Managing our School Roll

Holy Trinity is now “managing” our school roll for 2024. All of our learning spaces and year levels are now at full capacity for the year. This includes students who are already pre-enrolled for the 2024 year. The lack of further buildings/learning community spaces means we are in a position of having to manage school enrolments for new inquiries. Families are welcome to place their child on the preference waiting list for 2025 – this does not guarantee a placement for 2025 as we will only be able to accept siblings as a first priority.
A decision will be made for 2025 enrolments by 30 September 2024. Further “Enrolment Information” is on our school website. If a school family or associated family is inquiring about enrolment this year 2024, then you must meet with the Principal, Miss Lindstrom as soon as possible.

Student Attendance

The Boards and schools are requested by the Ministry of Education to have an “intervention tier” in place so that student attendance is monitored, tracked and intervention strategies are put in place quickly and efficiently to ensure high rates of school attendance for every child.

For Holy Trinity School, our student attendance concern is with the large number of children who are regularly arriving late to school after the 8:50am bell and/or are leaving school early in the afternoon. As the first intervention tier for our school, we will be monitoring student lateness and will be communicating promptly with those families where there is regular lateness – special circumstances permitting.

The school gates open from 8:30am with school commencing at 8:50am. The school day concludes at 2:50pm.

We are asking parents to refrain from requesting early afternoon finishing time for their child/ren unless it is necessary or a special circumstance. If you need to collect your child early from school then you must notify school the day before where practicable.

Please do not be offended if we say “no” to your child leaving school before the end of the school day if you do not have a legitimate reason. We are abiding by the Ministry of Education guidelines.

We are confident that by working together and respecting the school bell times, we can ensure our children have the best possible opportunity for their learning!

Health, Safety and Well Being

Expectations of parents and whānau when dropping off and picking up children …

  • The front of the school is for drop off and pick up ONLY. Please DO NOT park there and definitely do not leave your car there unattended
  • Kapowai Boulevard- please park on the left hand side of the road, facing Kuaka Drive-
  • NO PARKING on the yellow lines or in the turning bays.
  • Use the pedestrian gate from Kapowai Boulevard into the school.
  • Parking is permitted in the staff carpark , if there are vacant spaces.

We care about your children and we want to keep them safe. We request that all parents, caregivers and whānau  follow the school procedures. Thank you

Mobile Phones

With the new regulations, school Boards have a duty to prohibit the use and access of mobile phones. Regulation 22 Education (School Board) Regulations 2020, means that all state schools, including integrated state schools, must ensure students do not use or access a phone while they are attending school, including during lunch time and breaks. This includes students who are on a school course/trip or visit outside the school grounds. However, there are exceptions to this specified in the Regulations.

Our Holy Trinity Catholic Primary School Board, with the guidance of SchoolDocs which guides our policy making, ensuring it complies with regulations, states that Holy Trinity Catholic Primary School does not allow students to bring cellphones or personal digital devices to school.

Parent/Caregiver and student responsibilities

If a parent/caregiver needs to contact their child urgently during the day, they should call the office.

If a student brings a cell phone or a personal digital device to our school, the following guidelines apply:

  • Students must hand in their device to the office at the start of the day, and can collect it at the end of the day.
  • The school does not accept responsibility for lost, damaged, or stolen personal digital devices brought to the school but investigates any issues as appropriate.
